Welcome to Hotel Riviera Venezia Lido, a timeless gem nestled in the heart of the Venice Lido. Our historic hotel offers a unique blend of classical elegance and modern comforts, providing an unforgettable experience for all our guests. Here, history comes alive, and every corner tells a story.
Hotel Riviera Venezia Lido is steeped in rich history, dating back to its original construction phase. While specific historical records are scarce, we rely on a captivating view painted by the renowned artist Canaletto around 1735-40. This painting depicts the iconic St. Helena with the church of Santa Maria Elisabetta in the background, alongside two-story buildings located precisely where our hotel now stands. This visual evidence strongly suggests that our hotel’s origins are rooted in this era, offering a fascinating glimpse into Venice’s past.
The images in the Slideshow document the hotel’s transformation from the late 1980s to the early 21st century. These photographs showcase the hotel’s evolution, including the prominent “Campari” advertisements that once adorned our rooftop, reflecting the vibrant commercial history of the area.
From these early images, you can see the significant changes over time. Initially, the building housed the Hotel Ortolanella, which only had two floors. The adjacent church and the rear of the building, occupied by Bar Milano on the ground floor, added to the locale’s vibrant atmosphere. In 1925, the building underwent a significant expansion, adding two more floors and rebranding to Albergo Riviera, as evidenced by a postcard from 1931. This period of growth marked a new chapter in the hotel’s history, catering to a growing number of visitors who flocked to Venice for its enchanting beauty and cultural richness.
One of the most notable artifacts is a photograph from 1945, capturing the hotel during the American occupation. The image features the American flag proudly displayed on the hotel banner, symbolizing a poignant moment in history. This photograph is more than just a historical document; it represents the resilience and enduring spirit of the hotel and its community during challenging times.
Our commitment to preserving history recently led to an intriguing discovery. An inscription was found on an inner wall of the building, presumably signed by G. D’Annunzio, which reads:
“In this year / of war and glory / for the Italian weapons / Restoration work / in the old Ortolanella / Lido 12 December 1919 / G. D’Annunzio”
This inscription adds another layer to our rich historical tapestry, connecting the past to the present. It serves as a reminder of the many hands that have contributed to the preservation and restoration of our beloved hotel, ensuring that its legacy continues to inspire future generations.
